Who Let The Dogs Out?

I know that many of you are love dogs and have dogs for pets.  We had Abbi for many years and we still miss her.  Abbi loved people but she was somewhat territorial and what some call “dog aggressive”.  Not everyone likes dogs and many people are fearful of the larger breeds.  So, here are a few tips for those members in the neighborhood that own dogs:

  1. If your dog is prone to barking, please consider getting a bark collar of appropriate size for your pet. Your neighbors will appreciate you for controlling the barking.
  2. Make sure and keep your dog on a leash when going out for a walk.  And, be careful about letting your dog get too close to a stranger, even when on a leash.  We’ve had at least one incident recently of a dog on a leash biting a stranger.  Your neighbors don’t want the aggravation and you don’t want the liability.
  3. Please have your dog do its business in your own yard before going on a walk.  This won’t eliminate “stops” on your walk but can significantly reduce them.  And, please take along plastic bags or other materials or scoopers to clean up your dog’s business when it does go in someone else’s yard.
  4. Make sure you have adequate fencing when maintaining a dog in your back yard, especially larger dogs.  I’ve already heard from one member about her neighbors dogs that are coming through an un-mended fence into her back yard.  Remember the old saying that “good fences make good neighbors”.  That’s especially true when it comes to dogs.

There are a lot of beautiful dogs in our neighborhood.  Please make sure you do your part as a dog owner to take care of your pet and to respect your neighbors.
